“I Cannot Live Without Books” by Chris Mackowski of St. Bonaventure University

Created in 1958, National Library Week (April 13-19, 2008) is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries, librarians and library workers to promote library use and support.

The Olean Public Library is celebrating National Library Week by inviting Chris Mackowski, an associate professor of journalism and mass communication at St. Bonaventure University to speak on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 7:00 pm in the Olean Public Library Art Gallery. The title of his presentation is “I Cannot Live Without Books.”

"Books are so central to our society in so many ways, but what's even more remarkable is the way people become so emotionally attached to  them--to the worlds inside the pages and to the books themselves,"  Mackowski says. "Books are things of wonder."

Mackowski is a regular book reviewer and occasional columnist for the Olean Times Herald. He also works as a battlefield interpreter for the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Battlefield Park in Fredericksburg , Virginia .

The National Park Service recently commissioned Mackowski and co-author  Kris White to write a series of books about some of the battlefields  in central Virginia . The first book in the series, "The Last Days of  Stonewall Jackson," is due out later this year. Mackowski is the author of  two other books, as well, "The PR Bible for Community Theatres" and  "Original Works: Producing and Promoting Original Plays." He's also an award-winning commentator, newscaster, and playwright.

Mackowski lives in Limestone with his wife, Heidi, and their two children, Stephanie and Jackson.
